Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Sepik River region, ca. mid 20th century CE. A fascinating woven, painted panel in the form of a mythological beast. Made by weaving cane over a wooden frame, the creature has a rounded end and a pointed end, perhaps representing a tail or a snout, as well as four arms, each with five long fingers. The body has a long, dense "spine" with woven openwork rings on either side of it. Earth-based pink and pale yellow pigment has been splashed down the center and on the arms/digits. Made to be a decorative panel celebrating a triumph. Size: 20.5" W x 23" H (52.1 cm x 58.4 cm)
