Description:

Oceania, Papua New Guinea, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. Made of highly polished hardwood, and featuring rattan wrapped around the two beams that join the hull to the outrigger, this is a special model of an important method of transport in this region. The long canoe body is painted with brilliant blue zoomorphic motifs that include large eyes and lizard-like tails. Vessels of this style were the backbone of the coastal Papuan economy for millennia, allowing people to gather food and travel between islands easily. Size: 13.25" L x 20.5" W x 3.3" H (33.7 cm x 52.1 cm x 8.4 cm)
