Papua New Guinea, Madang Province, Ramu / Upper Keram River, ca. mid 20th century CE. Two beautiful ancestral masks, hand-carved from hard wood, each with circular eyes, slender noses, thin mouths, and areas of curved, recessed panels. The broad exterior areas of the smaller mask are painted in hues of orange and dark-brown, and those of the larger mask are painted with orange, white, and yellow, with all details and areas outlined in a dark pigment. A gorgeous ensemble! Lucite block for photography display purposes only. Size of largest: 5.625" W x 18.875" H (14.3 cm x 47.9 cm).
