Papua New Guinea, Kwoma Nowgi, Washkuk Village, East Sepik province, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A stylized biomorphic figure with large headdress and hands placed on hips, carved from one piece of wood with the exception of the detachable wood and textile nose ornament, painted in hues of red and white with fabulous diamond motif on back. Attractive matte patina. Traditionally these figures represent certain founding ancestors or cultural heroes, but various spirit beings as well. Custom wood block stand. Size: 21-1/4" (54 cm), on stand 23" (58.4 cm). Provenance: Ex-Adeon Gallery, Chicago, IL, acquired prior to 1970.
