Description:

Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Janaka Province, Wangi peoples, ca. mid-20th century CE. A finely constructed adze with a trapezoidal blade hewn from gray stone projecting from the front of the head. The rectangular body is bound with bi-chrome rattan fibers and flares outwards with a broad, X-adorned tail that acts as a counterweight to the blade, and beneath is a wooden handle that curves gently backwards. This style of axe is made mainly in the villages of Margravial and Kumbirai. Size: 19.75" W x 15.625" H (50.2 cm x 39.7 cm)

  • Condition: Pitting on edge of stone blade filled in with lighter material in several areas. Minor loosening to some rattan fibers and abrasions to handle, otherwise intact and very good. Nice color to rattan fibers and handle.
