Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Southern or Western Highlands, ca. 20th century CE. A dazzling braided-fiber necklace with a huge kina shell pendant of crescent form. Boasting a radiant surface, this lovely shell pendant is naturally adorned in curved stripes that mimic the shape of the shell in hues of pale yellow, golden tan, and creamy beige. Kina shells are used as currency among tribes of the Southern Highlands and Western Highlands regions of Papua New Guinea. This piece would have been used as a bride price and later worn as a status ornament. Size: 30.75" L (78.1 cm); Size of pendant: 7.125" W x 4.5" H (18.1 cm x 11.4 cm)
