Description:

South America, Peru or Bolivia, Aymara (Aimara) people, ca. early 20th century CE. A fine wool textile panel comprised of camelid (alpaca or llama) fibers dyed in bright hues of crimson red, blue, purple, black, and white. The patterning consists of solid bands of color and a matching pair of registers of abstract geometric motifs rendered in white threads onto of a multicolored ground - a truly mesmerizing combination of colors and shapes. The textile has a braided tassels on each corner and thick plaited borders on the top and bottom. This cloth was probably used to wrap a bundle of coca leaves and other personal effects - the owner would have tied the package together using the tassels. Size (textile): 18.75" L x 16.75" W (47.6 cm x 42.5 cm); (frame backing): 24.5" L x 22.5" W (62.2 cm x 57.2 cm)
