Description:

Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Highland region, ca. 20th century CE. A large example of a koteka, also known as a horim, penis gourd, or penis sheath, composed of a woven fiber cover with a bark frame inside. The fiber has raised, zigzagging lines, and is painted red, black, and white. A string for attaching the item around the body is sewn through the top of the piece. The koteka is worn by indigenous men in the western parts of PNG, and the decoration and form relate to their tribal affiliation, with men from the same tribe wearing the same style. This is a rather unusual and large style, as most are constructed using gourds. Size: 4.75" W x 22.15" H (12.1 cm x 56.3 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Tucson, Arizona, USA collection; ex-Ron Perry collection; Ron Perry collected art and artifacts for more than 40 years in New Guinea and the South Pacific. He collaborated with Carolyn Leigh to write a book entitled, "Art Dealer in the Last Unknown: Ron Perry & New Guinea Art: the early years 1964-1972" (2011)
