Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Kerema, Mai Village, ca. 1940s CE. A well preserved, one-sided, hand-carved wooden tapa beater in a flattened elliptical form. This tapa beater is flat on its beater-end, with a dense cross-hatched pattern across its face used to pulverize the inner bark of Mulberry trees into the soft and pliable strands that are used to make tapa cloths. It has a smoothed, pointed handle with a rounded-off backside. When laid flat on its backside, the beater is reminiscent of traditional fishing boats often seen in Papua New Guinea. Size: 20.7" L x 1.75" W (52.6 cm x 4.4 cm)
