Description:

Oceania, Papua New Guinea, lower Sepik River region, ca. first half of the 20th century CE. A lovely hand-carved wooden face mask defined by raised coffee-bean-shaped eyes, a triangular nose adorned with a massive nose plug, lightly-contoured nasolabial folds, and a petite mouth above a knob-shaped chin. The head is topped with a bifurcated coiffure comprised of a singular raised stripe projecting upwards from a simple horizonal head band. Several small perforations around the peripheries enable the mask to be worn and attached to a larger costume. Size: 5.5" W x 17.25" H (14 cm x 43.8 cm).
