Description:

Oceania, Papua New Guinea, ca. mid 20th century CE. A delightful, colorful dance costume, made of large triangular bark panels, each painted with swirling and circular white-on-black - sometimes with pale ocher yellow - motifs. Attached to one side is a brightly painted wooden mask, red with white and black ovals around the eyes and a long, avian-like beak contrasted with the more human-like eyes, mouth, and carved coiffure. Small painted wooden attachments and feathers also adorn the surface. A frame is visible below and inside of the roughly conical dance costume, which also has a long grass skirt. Size (height excludes the grass skirt): 30" W x 25" H (76.2 cm x 63.5 cm); 51" H (129.5 cm) on included custom stand.
