Description:

Oceania, Papua New Guinea, ca. first half of the 20th century CE. An intriguing dance helmet, hand-carved from wood with a wrapped and woven headdress beneath. The top of the helmet boasts an abstract, two-ended avian figure with conical heads, an arching back covered in drilled slots for inserting additional feathers from the cassowary bird, and nubbin legs, all presented with painted decorations in blue, red, yellow, and white hues. The circular headdress is wrapped with reeds and woven textile panels and lined with dozens of small white feathers as well as several bunches of slender, dark-brown feathers. Size: 16" L x 8.625" W x 7.625" H (40.6 cm x 21.9 cm x 19.4 cm).

Provenance: private Tucson, Arizona, USA collection, acquired between 1950 and 1985

  • Condition: Losses to some original feathers as shown. Minor nicks and abrasions to two-ended bird, head wrap portion, and some feathers, with fading to original pigmentation, and slight bending to overall form of head wrap. Light earthen deposits, fine patina, and nice traces of original pigmentation throughout.
