Description:

Papua New Guinea, Sepik River region, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. An intricately carved wooden canoe handle finial in the form of an ancestral figure wearing an elaborate headdress and body art/jewelry adorning the chest, waist, legs, and wrists - standing upon an integral hemispheric pedestal base adorned with a running zigzag motif around the periphery and gazing out with a mesmerizing visage. Papua New Guinea is known for its extremely rugged terrain. In fact, there are very few roads, and dugout canoes are the primary form of transportation along inland rivers such as the Sepik, the Fly, and their tributaries, in addition to the extensive lagoons and swamps such as the Asmat. For this reason, a great deal of time and effort is invested into the creation of canoes and canoe paddles. Size: 11.125" H (28.3 cm); 11.75" H (29.8 cm) on included custom stand.
