Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Sepik River region, ca. mid-20th century CE. A massive ornament designed to project from a canoe prow, with a wide, V-shaped attachment at the top and two wooden posts originating from the V, each decorated with a profusion of carved wooden items attached via horizontal spikes: a human head, multiple fish, discs and other geometric shapes, and sago leaf. Imagine how fierce this would have looked when displayed on the prow of a ship. Size: 16.5" W x 40" H (41.9 cm x 101.6 cm)
