Description:

Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Chambri Lakes, ca. mid 20th century CE. A delightful sago storage pot, made from a coarse red clay and painted with a white-on-grey motif on the projecting boar face that encompasses the handle. Otherwise the vessel is of simple form, with a short, flared foot, a rounded body, and a wide mouth above a gently corseted neck. The boar head has raised ridges encircling the eyes and forming crescent patterns around the face. The snout projects from the handle. Fantastical geometric motifs create symmetrical decoration on the boar's face. Chambri pottery is essential to food preparation and storage. This whimsical example is particularly fun! Size: 7" W x 12.5" H (17.8 cm x 31.8 cm)
