Description:

Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Jiwaka Province, Waghi people, ca. first half of the 20th century CE. A lovely wooden axe with a thick handle, a projecting back fin, and a forked frontal head wrapped with dried, resin-coated vine strands. The vine strands are wound tightly around the central body so as to secure the hand-carved grey-green stone blade head within its housing. Axes like this example are made of a form consistent among the Waghi peoples as well as those made in the villages of Mangarvigar and Gumbigai. Size: 16.625" W x 20" H (42.2 cm x 50.8 cm); 20.75" H (52.7 cm) on included custom stand.
