Description:

**Originally Listed At $500**

Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Middle Sepik River region, Iatmul peoples, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A wonderful, hand-carved wood figure of a female seated on a stool. Placing both hands on her bulbous - perhaps pregnant - belly, the fascinating figure gazes forward from deep-set eyes above a wide nose, and a large, closed mouth. Her long arms fall from sloped shoulders and bend at the elbows as her feet rest on the ground. Raised, annular nipples protrude from her chest, just above an incised navel. Her intricate coiffure falls down her back, boasting the ornate carving of a zoomorphic creature. Size: 4.5" W x 14.8" H (11.4 cm x 37.6 cm)
