Description:

Oceania, Papua New Guinea, central highlands, Dani (also Ndani) tribe, ca. mid-20th century CE. A dense cuirass woven from thick plant fibers that move and adjust to the movements of the wearer. The broad chest and back panels wrap around the wearer and have padded panels around the arm slots, and a pair of tightly wrapped shoulder straps arches over the tops of the arm holes. The original wheat-colored fiber strands have aged nicely and taken on a dark brown patina. Size: 12.5" W x 16" H (31.8 cm x 40.6 cm).

  • Condition: Slight bending to overall form of chest and back panels and shoulder straps, with light encrustations within some recessed areas, and fraying to some reeds, otherwise intact and very good. Light earthen deposits and nice patina throughout.
