Description:

Oceania, Papua New Guinea, possibly Yuat (Biwat) River, Mundugumor, ca. 20th century CE. A fantastical bamboo quiver with a carved wooden top that is both aesthetically striking and iconographically intriguing. The top is in the form of a rooster-like bird with a tall crest whose body transforms below the neck into a lizard with a long tail. This creature is perched atop a crocodile head with a long neck. Two rings of woven rattan, each decorated with long feathers, separate this upper part from the thick, hollow bamboo that forms the functional part of the quiver. The bamboo is incised to have a carved, serpent-like creature in a band around its center. A woven rattan handle is below that, with a wooden tip, also incised with relief motifs before terminating in a tiered cone with a flat base. Size: 4.9" W x 38.75" H (12.4 cm x 98.4 cm)
