Oceania, Papua New Guinea, North Maprik District, Abelam people, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A large and intriguing carved wooden statue depicting a male ancestor. The bulbous body is flanked with ring-adorned arms, boasts broad shoulders, and has delineated male genitalia near the base. The enlarged head has a shallow central crest, petite ears, and a curved goatee that doubles as a handle. A large beard surrounds the lower head and neck, and the top bears a crescent-shaped headdress. The entire figure is hollowed out inside, and traces of original brown pigment are visible across the exterior. Size: 12.5" W x 50.7" H (31.8 cm x 128.8 cm).
