Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Papua New Guinea, East Sepik River region, Abelam, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A large dark brown mask woven from thin reed strands, with large circular eyes, open eyebrows, an arching nose, and a small mouth. This example is referred to as a "mud mask" due to the thick layer of mud coating both the interior and exterior surfaces. The mud, once dried, was then colored with red-orange and white natural pigments in circular and striped patterns, giving the wearer the appearance of a fantastical entity. Size: 8.5" W x 9" H (21.6 cm x 22.9 cm).
