Description:

Central Asia, Pakistan or Afghanistan, Kuchi (Kochi) peoples, ca. mid-20th century CE. A collection of 3 belt sections comprised of nickel-silver with lapis stones and dangling ornaments of coins and faceted or cabochon glass in colorful hues. The main medallions of the 2 belts with lapis stones cut and into the square and triangular settings are backed with cotton cloth - added later to reinforce the links and panels. The dangling fringe on one is adorned with red, green, and cobalt glass and bells, and the other has over a dozen British India / Pakistan anna coins from the 1930s. The other belt has lengthy dangling components of colorful cabochon glass and paisa coins from the 1960s. Colorful clothing and jewelry were worn by the Kuchi people as ceremonial dress for weddings or other celebrations and belt sections like these were included as wedding attire for the bride Size: 13" L x 4.75" W (33 cm x 12.1 cm)

According to Richard Tapper's article, "Who are the Kuchi? Nomad self-identities in Afghanistan" published in the Journal of Royal Anthropological Institute, "'Kuchi', an Afghan Persian word meaning 'those who go on migrations', is the common generic term, used by both Afghans and foreigners, for the nomads of Afghanistan, as it has been for many decades. Most if not all the nomads, and indeed many long-settled former nomads, now acknowledge this name, yet in the 1960s and 1970s few of those so labelled used the term for themselves."
