Description:

Native American, Pacific Northwest, probably Kwakwaka'wakw (Kwakiutl) people, ca. mid 20th century CE. A charming wooden rattle with a rounded head featuring a tiny face with characteristically Northwest Coast features - thick black brows, wide eyes embellished with aqua blue pigment, a triangular nose, and a wide-lipped mouth. Surrounding this face is a finely grooved surface, perhaps to represent hair or plumage. The contiguous wooden handle is tubular, unpainted, and smooth to the touch. Shake it to hear a rich, deep rattling sound! Rattles, like many instruments in this tradition, are linked with shamanic practice. Size: 4.4" W x 9.55" H (11.2 cm x 24.3 cm); 11" H (27.9 cm) on included custom stand.
