Description:

Native American, Pacific Northwest Coast, ca. mid to late 20th century CE. A striking, brightly colored, hand-carved wooden mask depicting a human face with the distinctive beak, eyes, and cheeks of a puffin. Tufted raffia, affixed using nails and cord along the centerline of the top of the head, creates a dramatic crest or coiffure which hangs over the thick painted black brows onto the cheeks. The mask also has crescent-moon shaped, red-rimmed eyes, sharply incised cheeks with green details, a large-lipped mouth open as if singing, and an orange and red beak-like nose. A leather cover and twin straps at the back allow the mask to be fastened around the head. Masks like this one are carved to represent the familiar spirit of shamans who have healing powers and communicate with the animal and spirit worlds. Size: 5.5" W x 12" H (14 cm x 30.5 cm); 16" H (40.6 cm) on included custom stand.
