Description:

Native American, Pacific Northwest Coast, United States and Canada, Tlingit or Haida people, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A fishing spear known as a leister, made of wood, whale bone, and fiber cords. This spear has a short handle and four prongs that radiate outward with inward pointed tabs are attached to the tips with fiber cords. A central bone spike with serrated edges is set in the center of the prongs. This spike would stab the fish; then the prongs would help contain it so the fish could not wriggle free as easily. This tool was versatile and could be used for spear fishing or attached to a rope and used like a harpoon. Size: 8.5" W x 21.25" H (21.6 cm x 54 cm)
