Description:

Native American, Pacific Northwest, probably Tlingit, ca. 1986 CE, signed on back by Greg Prescott (active later 20th century CE). A fierce headdress, hand-carved from wood, with the head of an anthropomorphic shark man at its center. The head is largely unpainted, with his broad eyebrows, outlines around his eyes, his nostrils, and his lips accented with black and red. A large, fin-like crest rises from the top of his head. Huge ovoids of pearlescent abalone form his eyes; his mouth is full of sharp teeth. Abalone shell discs decorate his fin and form a border on the black rectangular frame into which the face is set. Seven spikes made of fishing line rise from the top of the head, and a thick wood band is attached to it to hold it in place. Size: 9" L x 6" W x 12.5" H (22.9 cm x 15.2 cm x 31.8 cm)
