Description:

Native American, Pacific Northwest, 'Namgis subgroup of the Kwakwaka'wakw peoples (anglicized to Nimpkish), Yalis (Alert Bay), British Columbia, ca. 20th century CE. A huge, hand-carved, brightly painted totem representing the carver's paternal and maternal crests. The totem displays an eagle with wings spread atop a grizzly bear who holds a rival chief in his paws. Blue, red, and black pigment provide dramatic contrast with the rich color of the wood. Totem poles are visual statements of the identity of their creators; the figures depicted on them represent beings who the ancestors encountered in the mythical past and who became symbols of their families. Size: 24" W x 27.5" H (61 cm x 69.8 cm)
