Native American, Pacific Northwest Coast, possibly Kwakwaka'wakw (Kwakiutl) or Haida people, ca. mid 20th century CE. A beautifully carved, totem pole-like wooden walking stick, burnished to a rich, deep brown. From the top down, it features an eagle, raven, another eagle, whale, human, whale, and final human face. Each is carved in the delightful style of the Pacific Northwest. The talking stick, also called a speaker's staff, is used in many Native American tribes, especially on the West Coast. It grants the authority to speak, and is typically carved by the person calling a meeting. Size: 1.25" W x 48" H (3.2 cm x 121.9 cm); 49.25" H (125.1 cm) on included custom stand.
