Description:

Native American, Pacific Northwest Coast (probably southern Alaska), Tlingit people, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A large cylindrical basket composed of tightly-woven reed strands in hues of wheat, tan, maroon, grey, and vermilion. The basket has a circular base which is slightly raised in the center, tall walls, and a thick rim reinforced with wide fibers meant to support a slightly-wider lid. The exterior boasts a minimalist register consisting of two large whales - with defined fins and rounded heads - being hunted by two boats filled with oarsmen. A fine example of utilitarian Northwest Coast artistry! Size: 10.5" W x 5.875" H (26.7 cm x 14.9 cm).

Provenance: private Southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s
