Description:

Native American, Pacific Northwest, Haida, British Columbia, ca. 1980 CE, carved by Glen Pollard (b. 1957 in Haida Gwaii). A compelling black argillite pipe featuring a frog crouched on the stem and a large eagle with red argillite eyes whose body forms the chamber. Argillite is a fine grained sedimentary rock that is essentially made of mud and ooze; it often has a smooth appearance like this one. In the 19th century, the Haida people began to carve this material as a trade good with visiting Europeans; the tradition continues today. This particular example is carved as a totem, with the two animals stacked atop each other and flowing into each other through the use of similar carved forms and motifs. Size: 5.5" W x 3.45" H (14 cm x 8.8 cm); 4.75" H (12.1 cm) on included custom stand.
