Description:

West Africa, Nigeria, Yoruba culture, ca. early 20th century CE. A skillfully-carved wooden wand topped with the figure of a kneeling female. The intriguing woman boasts a stylized visage featuring two enormous almond-shaped eyes, a petite nose, thin lips, and a pair of horizontally stretched ears, all topped with an elongated coiffure that slants behind her. Her pointed breasts hang above her bulbous belly, which she holds with both hands, suggesting she may be pregnant with child. Enveloped in a gorgeous hue of dark brown and a lustrous finish, the lovely female sits upon a tall integral plinth with an ovoid base. A square hole is carved into the stand, near the base, and a strip of leather is tied throughout, perhaps intended as a suspension for ornaments. Size: 2.5" W x 10.5" H (6.4 cm x 26.7 cm)
