Description:

West Africa, Nigeria, Yoruba peoples, ca. 20th century CE. A fascinating pottery effigy vessel in the form of a nude female holding an object between her pendulous breasts with her long, slender arms. Rotund in form, she presents a tranquil visage with closed eyes, a broad nose, and full lips flanked by lines of ceremonial scarification that adorn her cheeks. Incised bands of gridded motif and lines of raised coffee bean-shaped patterns wrap around her bulbous body as her posterior protrudes from the verso and her head opens to the rim of the vessel. Originally a hue of dark gray, the jar is now covered in earthen deposits giving it a warm hue of burnt sienna. Size: 9" L x 7.5" W x 10" H (22.9 cm x 19 cm x 25.4 cm)
