Description:

West Africa, Nigeria, ca. 20th century CE. A fascinating ritual object, hand-carved from wood, shaped like a bird with its body pressed together sleekly as if it is plummeting to the earth in the moment of the hunt. The head is conical, with clear signs of repeated wear from ritual activities. The body is solid, with a piece of twine tied around the lower neck. A flared, trapezoidal region forms tail feathers. Size: 18.75" W x 4.25" H (47.6 cm x 10.8 cm)
