Description:

West Africa, Nigeria, Igbo peoples (Ezza or Izzi subgroup), ca. 20th century CE. An elaborately carved wooden dance head crest of tubular form with 4 janiform faces and a discoid rattan base. Intended to be worn horizontally atop the head, the intriguing headdress features incised geometric designs on the body and a conical knob at the top. Each stylized countenance displays a heavy brow atop sunken eyes, a pointed nose, and an open mouth with lengthy teeth. Drill holes at the top of the mask suggest it was once decorated with perishable items like feathers, quills, and hair. Size: 5.1" Diameter x 10.7" H (13 cm x 27.2 cm); 14.3" H (36.3 cm) on included custom stand.
