Description:

West Africa, Nigeria, probably Yoruba peoples, mid to late 20th century CE. A large and colorful hand-carved wood mask designed to be worn atop the head and project high above it - this type of mask is possibly an Epa type or a Geleda type. The color suggests it is a colonial version. It shows a woman, naked, with a bowl cut of thick black painted hair. Her hands are clasped in front of her stomach. She has pierced ears that probably once held metal rings or some other decoration. The rounded base, which forms the mask, has a striped pattern and narrow rounded cutouts for the wearer to see through. Size: 8.75" W x 23" H (22.2 cm x 58.4 cm)

Provenance: Ex-Adeon Gallery, Chicago, IL, acquired prior to 1970.
