Description:

Papua New Guinea, Boiken, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A beautiful bowl carved, of a large shallow form, carved from one piece of wood with impressive sea turtle iconography on the bottom comprised of two stylized faces on opposite sides of the bowl and a central circular panel for their shared body. Two protruding handles lie atop the turtles' heads. A bowl like this would have been used to store important food sources such as sago flour or dough. Size: 15.5" L x 14.5" W x 3.5" H (39.4 cm x 36.8 cm x 8.9 cm)
