Native American, Southwestern and Northwestern United States, Pima or Papago, ca. 20th century CE. A wonderful basket handwoven from white willow bark and Devil's Claw to present a planar base, towering walls adorned by brown and beige stair-steppe patterns forming lozenge motifs, and a herringbone rim over a deep basin. The early Pima baskets were primarily utilitarian - used to carry water, firewood, prepare food and store items. These baskets are handmade, woven with native plants including yucca, bear grass, and Devils Claw. The hues are natural as Native American weavers appreciated the natural colors of desert plants, as evidenced in the organic chocolate-brown and almond hues inherent to the finely woven fibers of this example. Size: 9.9" Diameter x 4.75" H (25.1 cm x 12.1 cm)
