Description:

Native American, Plains, probably Cheyenne, ca. 1970s. A vintage ceremonial war shirt made from elk, deer, or sheep hide, the sleeves and upper section dyed blue-green, the lower section a natural tawny hue, decorated with bands of colorful beadwork that adorn both sleeves, additional bands that extend over the shoulders, as well as the square neck tab. Quill-wrapped long horse or human hair and hide fringes further adorn the sleeves, bodice, and neck tab, adding a flowing, luxurious quality. Size: 47" L x 22" W (119.4 cm x 55.9 cm); neck 21" L (53.3 cm)

The beaded bands on the sleeve each measure 23.75" L x 3.75" W (60.3 x 7.6 cm). The bands that extend from front to back over the shoulders each measure more than 36" L x 3.75" W (91.4 x 7.6 cm). These beaded bands are adorned with various tribal symbols, including a very prominent bear claw symbol, that demonstrate the indigenous embrace of stylistic figuration, geometry, and color. Note, the artisan(s) use of a virtual rainbow of hues including pink, red, green, yellow-green, cobalt blue, and turquoise glass beads on a white beaded background.

The two primary colors, yellow and blue, symbolize the sky and rock, basic elements of the Lakota cosmos.
