Description:

Native American, probably Plains, ca. 1970s CE. A large gun case made from animal hide and meticulously decorated on both sides with various cross-like motifs comprised of glass beads in red, green, black, and white hues. Decorated scabbards or gun cases like this example featured the colors and designs that symbolized their tribes. Housed in a glass-fronted wooden case with perforations on back for displaying on wall. Size: 30" L x 7" W (76.2 cm x 17.8 cm); ties measure 7.25" L (18.4 cm)

Native Americans were introduced to guns in the 1700s. This historic moment changed their practices immensely, as the indigenous recognized that their traditional weapons were ineffectual against the gun. Various tribes forged relations with Anglos and began carrying guns, whether on horseback of foot. These prized possessions were housed in elaborately crafted scabbards like this example.
