Description:

Oceania, Micronesia, Palauan Islands, ca. mid-20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden tray with a slightly concave basin, the rim inlaid with nacre shells in four areas along the rim. The vessel is shaped like a boat, with a thick ring foot supporting the basin which was used for serving fish. The graining of the wood is the main focal point of this piece, and the surface is polished and smooth. Interestingly the shell inlays are carved to symbolize the lips of a giant clam! Size: 14.75" L x 7" W x 2" H (37.5 cm x 17.8 cm x 5.1 cm)
