Description:

New World, Mexico, ca. mid 20th century CE. A playful, brightly-painted folk art mask for the Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) festival. The mask has a skull-like countenance, with huge open eye sockets, a truncated, skeletal nose, and a giant leering grin that reveals a mouthful of large, even teeth. The artist has painted the mask a skull-like grey-white with red details on the mouth, cheeks, and around the eyes; black lines give eyebrows and the impression of cheekbones as well as create a wavy linear pattern on the broad forehead. Size: 7.75" W x 11.85" H (19.7 cm x 30.1 cm)
