Description:

Latin America, Mexico, Michoacan, ca. mid to late 20th century CE. A painted wooden carnival mask for the Winter Dance representing Maringuilla (Little Mary) presenting a lovely visage of a sweet girl with long eye lashes, brown and white inlaid glass eyes, eye slits with arched painted brows above, a slender nose, and heart-shaped pink lips. Interestingly, a mask like this was intended for a man acting out the young female character known as Maringuilla (Little Mary) who traditionally dances arm-in-arm with the grandfather character known as Viejo (Old Man). A lovely example! Size: 7" L x 6" W (17.8 cm x 15.2 cm)

This example is very similar to another created by Antonio Saldana of San Juan Nuevo, Michoacan (Tarascan) (1987) published on p. 85 in "Tigers, Devils, and the Dance of Life: Masks of Mexico" by Barbara Mauldin (Santa Fe: Museum of New Mexico Press, 1999)
