Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Latin America, Mexico, ca. mid-20th century CE. A striking wood diablo or devil mask with a sweeping moustache and furrowed brow, crowned by a pair of slender, curved horns likely from a young goat or sheep. His brow projects forward and extends to a huge, bent nose just above petite lips and a pointed chin. Giant ears flank the fierce visage. Depictions of demons and devils have been adopted into various folk dances and rituals from morality plays to satires throughout Mexico. Satan appears in dances such as Los Tecuanes and Moors and Christians as well as in Carnival celebrations. Christmas pageants called pastorelas have masked devil characters that try to keep shepherds from seeing the Baby Jesus. Size: 8" W x 13.8" H (20.3 cm x 35.1 cm)

Provenance: ex-collection of the late Peter Arnovick, San Francisco, California, USA, acquired before 1995
