Mexico, Naolinco, Vera Cruz, ca. 20th century CE. This mask will catch the eye! Purple with huge staring eyes, a wide smile, and a single tooth in its thin-lipped mouth, this wood carved mask is part of a tradition of festival masks in Naolinco and elsewhere in Veracruz state. They are worn as part of a traditional dance called Dance of the Moors and Christians, which has been both a local tradition and a powerful tourist draw to the area throughout the 20th century. Size: 8" W x 7.75" H (20.3 cm x 19.7 cm)
