Description:

Latin America, Mexico, Oaxaca, Manuel Jimenez, "Elefante," ca. 1975 CE. This wooden elephant was hand-carved and painted by Manuel Jimenez Ramirez (1919-2005), a 20th century Mexican artist credited with originating the Oaxacan version of alebrijes. Alebrijes are in essence animal figures hand-carved from wood and then hand-painted with lively patterns in contrasting bold hues. This example depicting an elephant is somewhat rare, standing apart from his more colorful alebrijes. One can find Jimenez' creations in both private collections and public institutions worldwide. Size: 11-1/2" x 3-1/2".
