Description:

North America, Mexico, ca. mid-20th century CE. A hand-carved greenstone plaque featuring the right-facing image of a seated individual. The figure sits with bent legs in front of a portly body, holds one arm up in the air, and turns his gaze over his left shoulder. Thick lips, a slit-form eye, and a bulbous nose constitute the visage beneath the backswept coiffure, and a circular ear ornament is visible near the bottom of his hair. This plaque perhaps pays homage to the rulers or people of the great Olmec and Maya civilizations that shaped the cultural landscape for modern-day Mexico and Central America. Size: 2.5" W x 3" H (6.4 cm x 7.6 cm); 3.9" H (9.9 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: ex-private collection of actor Anthony Quinn and his wife Katherine, Bristol, Rhode Island, USA acquired prior to 2000
