Latin America, Mexico, ca. mid-20th century CE. A vintage Mexican folk art church, attributed to IsabellaDeMayo, this lovely polychrome pottery model of a Spanish Colonial church with twin spires topped by crosses, a third cross atop the back of the model, two birds alighting beside each turret and a bright yellow flower atop the central section of the roof, all glazed in beautiful hues of russet red, blue-green, and golden yellow, with Baroque elements derived from Spain. Spanish Colonial architecture inspired awe amongst the indigenous of the Americas, and new churches and mission buildings, usually centrally located on higher ground for maximum effect, were erected in attempts to Hispanicize the native populations. A wonderful piece for its folk art style and meaningful iconography! Size: 5.75" W x 10.25" H (14.6 cm x 26 cm)
