Pre-Columbian, Central Mexico, Tlatilco culture, ca. 500 BCE; Mexico, ca. mid-20th century CE. A fine trapezoidal brooch displaying a Tlatilco redware pottery head in the center of a brass setting. Dangling from the lower periphery are eight rectangular and spherical beads with pinpoint stippling that forms minimalist linear motifs, and above the larger beads are brass spheres. Size (pendant): 2.3" W x 4.5" H (5.8 cm x 11.4 cm); (head): 1.375" W x 2" H (3.5 cm x 5.1 cm); (necklace): 22.5" L (57.2 cm)

Provenance: private Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA collection; ex-Minerva Gallery; ex-Benjamin Vega, California, USA, acquired in 2006 to 2007; ex-Gene and Virginia George, brought to the USA from 1961 to 1966

  • Condition: Strung and constructed in modern times and wearable as shown. Pottery head and beads are ancient, and setting, wires, spheres, and necklace cord are modern. Minor abrasions to head and beads, with light fading to pigment on head, otherwise intact and very good. Nice remains of pigment on head. The word "Mexico" is stamped on verso of setting.
