Description:

Latin America, Mexico, ca. 1900 to 1920 CE. A vintage, hand-carved, hand-painted in polychrome and gold leaf, and bejeweled wooden Santo in the form of Nuestra Senora de la Macarena - a celebrated icon of the Virgin Mary that originated in Spain. This title (here spelled Macayena as opposed to Macarena) as well as the artist's name "Q. Cortes" is inscribed in black pigment on the base. A stunning piece, replete with expert carving technique making for a naturalistic rendering of the Virgin's delicate facial features and hand as well as meticulous delineation of the intricate patterns upon her garments and coiffure, and that elaborate embellishment with colorful jewels, all making for a brilliant example. Size: 6.75" W x 9.25" H (17.1 cm x 23.5 cm)

Provenance: Ex - Collection of Deacon K. Giacone
