Oceania, New Zealand, Maori culture, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A gorgeous example of a carved wooden taiaha, a weapon for close combat, with ornate motifs on its lower end that resemble eyes; this paddle end tapers to a long, cylindrical shaft that terminates in a zoomorphic, avian form with a long beak and two inlaid abalone shell "eyes". Feathers and twine decorate separate the handle from the shaft. Size: 2.65" W x 57.5" H (6.7 cm x 146 cm)

Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s
